Fender Lead II History
The Fender Player Lead II guitar, reissued by Fender in 2020, improves upon the notoriously heavy Fender Lead II guitars of the 1980's. The new Fender Player Lead II guitars have a lighter weight, an added 22nd fret and medium jumbo frets plus an improved through body hardtail bridge. These changes drastically improve the original design. However the pickups that come standard with Fender Player Lead II guitars can sound thin, loose and jangly. The thinner tone is due to pickups wound with 43AWG poly wire in the 7k range. In the 7k range, a 43AWG Stratocaster style pickup is tonally serviceable, but lacks the tonal range, punch and dynamics of a hotter 42 AWG Plain Enamel wound Strat style pickup.
To fix this problem ThroBak's approach is to wind a vintage inspired, Hot Strat style bridge pickup to pair with a Medium output neck pickup to transform the Fender Lead II guitar into what we like to think of as the "Les Paul Special", Fender equivalent to a Stratocaster that Fender should have made in the 50's and 60's. With ThroBak FL-II MXV pickups installed, the Player Fender Lead II wakes up tonally. You can explore new territory with middle position in and out of phase tones that were never possible with a Stratocaster. ThroBak FL-II MXV neck position pickup tones are clear and full and the bridge pickup tones powerful and perfect for leads. When you pair ThroBak FL-II MXV pickups with the neck and bridge pickup master tone control of the Fender Lead II, you can make the pickups sound as Fat or Bitey as you like. Unleash the full tonal potential from your Fender Lead II with ThroBak FL-II MXV Custom replacement pickups!
